Bridges to Growth: Tech Internships in Switzerland

Application call for 2nd cohortIn 2022, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation initiated a programme offering 4-month internships for selected students and fresh graduates in technology-related fields from Gazan universities.

The programme is open to Bachelor’s (last year) and Master’s students, as well as young professionals who graduated in the last five years, having the ambition and competences to get an international exposure and build their technical capacities in the Swiss tech ecosystem.

Interns will benefit from an on-site work experience within a Swiss start-up or research laboratory, in the fields of machine learning, artificial intelligence or data science technologies. Internships will start in September 2023.

Objectives

·         Enhancing the capacities of Palestinian graduates in an international working environment.

·         Creating linkages and trust towards future business and research partnerships between the Swiss start-up scene/academia and their peers in the occupied Palestinian territory.

 Partners

·         Palestinian institutions: University College of Applied Science Technology Incubator (UCAS TI), coordinating the applications of students from all Gazan universities, such as UCAS, the Islamic University of Gaza, Al-Azhar University and the University of Palestine.

·         Swiss universities: Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and HES-SO Fribourg, including the on-campus and affiliated start-ups.

Requirements for a successful application

·        Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s students and graduates (less than 5 years) from engineering/IT faculties.

·         Proven skills and knowledge in software engineering, Python programming language, machine learning (including tools and libraries), data visualization, and probability and statistics.

·         Advanced English level as a working language and aptitude to integrate into an existing team.

·         Motivation to work in an international environment, in contact with different cultures.

·         Ability to travel abroad.

·         Previous work experience in the private sector and/or with international clients is an asset.

·         Commitment to contribute to the upgrade of Gazan tech ecosystem upon return.

·         Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Costs: The programme will cover basic living expenses including accommodation, food and health insurances, as well as transportation costs to and from Switzerland.

Timeline

•Early March
•Application call shared with Gazan universities
•Early April
•UCASTI exam: pre-selection of 25-30 candidates
•Mid- to End April
•EPFL exam: Coding and data analysis tests, interviews
•Early May
•10 successul candidates start one-month, part-time remote training in Machine Learning
•Early June 2022
•After evaluation, the best 5-6 candidates are matched with start-ups and labs
•June/August 2023
•Administrative processes and pre-departure workshops
•Early September 2023
•Interns leave to Switzerland and start work experience
•End December 2023
•Interns return to Gaza and strengthen local tech ecosystem
